This toolkit is intended to support clinicians, researchers, and people with limb difference in the selection and use of outcome measures across a range of assessment domains.
It is important to emphasise that this is a living document. As new evidence, outcome measures, and clinical
experience emerge, the toolkit will be reviewed and expanded over time.
There are multiple assessment tools available for the different domains covered in this toolkit, and
several measures span more than one domain. The working group reviewed commonly used
outcome measures in both amputee and non-amputee populations and considered their relevance,
feasibility, and potential value for people with limb difference.
The evidence base specific to people with limb difference remains limited in many areas. Where
population-specific evidence was unavailable, information from other clinical or non-clinical
populations has been included to help readers understand the potential relevance, strengths, and
limitations of the tools. Such information should be interpreted with appropriate caution.
The toolkit highlights a set of recommended outcome measures. These recommendations are
intended to promote greater consistency in assessment across clinics and services, facilitate
comparison of outcomes between centres, and support the development of a stronger research
evidence base. Over time, the use of common measures will help generate data that can be used to
inform and strengthen clinical practice for people with limb difference.
